Eco campaign asks pupils to find old electronics

An environmental campaign is calling for primary school pupils to search out old electrical appliances to be reused or recycled. Wastebuster, based in Albury in Surrey, is in the second year of its Hidden Treasure Hunt, supplying schools with free teaching resources. The campaign aims to educate pupils about the value of the often rare materials inside electronic devices and encourage them to be repaired, passed on or recycled.

Almost 79,000 items were recycled, repaired or reused during the campaign's first year, according to the community interest company. Wastebuster founder Katy Newnham said the Hidden Treasure Hunt was "about helping children see unwanted electricals differently". "This year, we want to inspire even more families to rummage through their homes, uncover their hidden treasure and take positive action," she said.

The campaign also seeks to remind families that recycling appliances correctly helps to prevent battery fires at waste facilities . Teachers can register to take part in the campaign through Wastebuster's online school platform.
